Educator Resources

We provide a variety of educator resources to help teachers understand the unique needs of students with ASD and related disabilities. Understanding your student’s needs, strengths, and challenges is crucial for providing them with the necessary support during their learning journey.

These resources are designed to help educators enhance their teaching approaches and positively impact their student’s lives. Our goal is to equip educators with the knowledge, skills and aids necessary to create inclusive and supportive learning environments for students.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) presents unique challenges and opportunities within educational settings. ASD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how individuals perceive and interact with the world around them.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), people with ASD commonly struggle with communication and social interaction while also displaying restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. Autism is known as a spectrum disorder because there is wide variation in the type and severity of symptoms people experience.

In the school environment, students with ASD and related disabilities may exhibit a diverse range of strengths and difficulties across academic, social, and behavioral realms. This underscores the importance of tailored support and understanding to facilitate their success and well-being in educational environments.

ASD Learning Styles

Learning styles refer to the specific ways in which students learn – how they gain information from the environment, process it, and learn new skills. Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and related disabilities interact with the environment differently compared to non-autistic students. Various cognitive strengths and weaknesses significantly influence their learning process.

Understanding the different learning styles of students is crucial for developing effective educational strategies and interventions for the unique needs of students with ASD and related disabilities.

What is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a systematic approach to study the scientific relationship between learning and behavior. It focuses on understanding how behaviors work and are influenced by the environment. This understanding is then used to teach students with ASD and related disabilities expected behaviors and new skills.

ABA is based on the idea that behavior can be changed by rewarding desired behaviors and discouraging unwanted ones. ABA in the classroom involves observing students’ behaviors and focusing on teaching them new ways to behave in different situations.

Teachers can use the principles of behavior analysis to improve their students’ language, social, and communication skills, enhance their attention, and reduce problem behaviors.

Elements of Structured Classroom Teaching

The CMS Approach™ applies the elements of structured classroom teaching into its six Domains. These Domains are based on evidence-based research and provide extra guidance for teachers to implement interventions that can help students with autism in the classroom.

Structured classroom teaching focuses on making things organized, consistent, and easy to understand for students with ASD and related disabilities. Teachers use tools such as visual aids, clear instructions, and personalized support for each student. The aim is to create a learning experience in the classroom that meets the unique learning needs of all students.

The Science Behind Us

Although students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and related disabilities have diverse literacy experiences and abilities, there are still some common patterns and connections that emerge. Their communication, cognition, and literacy skills are closely linked areas that influence each other. Strengthening one area can improve the others, and difficulties in one can impact learning in others.

The CMS Approach™ is based on empirical research and focuses on these interconnected areas, called the Triad of Foci. It uses evidence-based methods to target and develop essential skills in students with ASD and related disabilities.
